Long Stitch Binding try out piece:
Finished Book
I've recently tried the binding method of long stitch binding, a method that involves stitching directly onto the cover itself, the cover being a piece of leatherette. I wanted to use this method to see if I could use it for future journals. I learned this by watching tutorials on Youtube done by Sea Lemon, so that I could get an idea of how I should stitch. The starting point was using parchment paper, in signatures numbered to thirteen so that the journal would be big and have plenty of pages for art purposes. The stitching was difficult as I had to create a loop in the first binding hole for other signatures.
It took about three attempts and even resorted to using my awl to keep the loop in play, clearly I would need to find a way to correct this issue or perhaps use thicker thread. I created a hanging off area inspired by old age journals that use this technique and the tie keeps the pages stacked together. I usually sign my name and address on the inside page in the event it gets lost, however I decided to sign on the inside of the leather using ink on a brush, however I realised that I'd made a mistake and using a wet sponge I corrected this though it did leave a smudge on the leather inside. Otherwise I'd learned a lot from this first attempt as its given me insight for future attempts at this method.
