Painting With Photoshop: Opacity Jitter tryout: 3/1/19

I had recently found a tutorial about something called opacity jittering, in Photoshop which from what I could tell involved altering the brush settings so it would respond to the pen pressure of the tablet pen. I found this of interest and hoped it would help developing my skills in painting within Photoshop.

This tutorial, I felt captured the painted feeling of what I wanted to achieve for my work. So I decided to have a try at doing it. I decided to create a new ID piece for my blogs using this method. To begin I did a rough sketch of my face using a reference photo then filled in some flat base colours. It was then time to apply the shading of the face. I added them to the skin and hair layers by locking the transparent pixels so I could paint on that layer only.

Having done the shadows the tutorial stated that I needed to alter some settings so that the brush would respond to the pressure from the Cintiq pen. When I applied it I was amazed how the paints came out rather light and got darker as I applied pressure. The colours then needed to be done on a layer above the line art. This I felt looked like something I'd seen from the Art of Loish who's work I take inspiration from for some of my work.

Looking at the piece I decided to add an anime like blur effect by duplicating the final piece then using the gaussian blur tool to make the duplicate layer look blurred to then lower the opacity so that it would show the original. I would think this made it look good. I then did a similar piece but decided to add some comic textures. This was inspired by the style of Spiderman Into the Spiderverse, after going to see the film I was entranced by the artwork and style of animation it was like animation and comic books got together and had a baby.

I used Clip Studio as it was primarily comic book illustration material.

Looking back on my work I would say I've learned a lot from this tutorial and hope to put it to use in my future illustration work using Photoshop. However I feel my use of the comic textures could be improved slightly such as adding it to the highlights and skin texture in certain areas.

In conclusion I was satisfied with my work and hope to develop this technique further and hope it helps me to create artwork using Photoshop.
